Guest Workshop: Intro to Table Braiding/Hair Chains with Zen Hansen

Join guest artist Zen Hansen as she teaches you an introductory history of Victorian hairwork and then guides you through the step by step process of creating a round or twist braid (or both, you can use two patterns in one piece), from prep to finish. Free Storytime: A Casual Gathering at Mark Campbell’s grave site

Join hairwork historian Zen Hansen as she shares photos, mementos, and stories about the history of hairwork in the United States through the lens of Mark Campbell. This historical hairworker’s book “The Art of Hairwork” was published in 1857 and remains the most comprehensive guide to the craft that remains in the modern day. Although this is a free event, we ask that you please register so we know how many people to expect. By registering you will find other important info like a map to the grave site and a suggestion of what to bring with you to be comfortable during the presentation. Join guest artist Zen Hansen as she teaches you how to make a historically rooted round snake plait pattern from 1856, as well as one of Mark Campbell's 'open lacework' patterns. You will craft adjustable finger rings, with the option to choose from snake heads/tails or simple silver cap findings as finishing touches. You will keep your finished hair ring and study materials. Join guest artist Theresa Applegate as she teaches you how to make your own finished sterling silver jewelry from literally nothing over the course of a weekend. She will show you how to work with wax and natural materials to make molds, make a sprue tree, invest the waxes, burn them out, cast, quench, and finish the pieces (and every step in between that I’m forgetting right now).
