Chicago Taxidermy Workshop - Squirrels with Advanced Techniques - Make a Deposit

150.00

Join me at my private studio in Logan Square, Chicago and learn how to create your own beautiful taxidermy mount of a squirrel (red, grey, or fox depending on availability) under the guidance of a professional! In this one-day workshop lasting approximately four hours, I will guide students through taxidermy techniques a bit more advanced than my beginners’ classes, including preparing a tanned hide for taxidermy, modifying a commercial taxidermy form, mounting the squirrel, and finishing touches. No experience is necessary, this is simply listed as an “advanced” class to give current students a chance to expand their repertoire. The total cost is $300 (discounts available, read more below). This listing is for a $150 deposit, and the balance will be paid in cash.

What’s happening?
Each student will be provided with a sustainably-sourced squirrel hide, which has already been removed from the carcass and tanned, and all of the materials to mount it. No animals were killed for the sake of the art. The squirrel class is limited to ten students each and will focus on the finishing touches of taxidermy rather than a snapshot of the whole process. We will use a variety of professional materials including a commercial taxidermy form to create unique and display-worthy mounts that, with proper care, will last for generations. There will be several poses to choose from, but if you have a special request (sitting, climbing, etc.) please write it in the notes when you make your deposit so we have time to make accommodations. This is a great class for beginners and advanced students alike, because it focuses on a different skill set than other taxidermy classes you may have taken with me or another instructor.
Taxidermy is an age-old craft with roots in the arts and the sciences. Its applications are not only useful in home decor for hunters, but in museums and scientific collections around the world. Aside from Chuck Testa, other famous taxidermists include Charles Darwin and even Teddy Roosevelt. Follow in their footsteps and preserve a piece of nature for yourself.

What do I leave with?
Each student will leave with a finished taxidermied squirrel mount, knowledge for aftercare, and the know-how to mount other small mammals on their own. Tanned hides are readily available for future taxidermy projects and students will also receive a list of suppliers and materials needed in order to procure supplies for future projects.

When and where?
The class will be taking place on Sunday, October 29th from noon to 4 pm. The location is my home studio in Logan Square and only registered students will receive the address, emailed the week of the class along with other information. Emails inquiring about my home address before the weekend of the class will be ignored.
