Austin Taxidermy Workshop - Advanced Bird Techniques - Make a Deposit

150.00

Join us at Whirlaway Farm and learn how to create your own beautiful taxidermy mount of a bird (fancy pigeon or starling, depending on availability) under the guidance of a professional! In this one-day workshop lasting approximately four hours, I will guide students through taxidermy techniques a bit more advanced than my beginners’ classes, including preparing a fleshed bird skin for taxidermy, modifying a commercial taxidermy form, mounting the bird, and finishing touches. No experience is necessary, this is simply listed as an “advanced” class to give current students a chance to expand their repertoire. The total cost is $275 (discounts available, read more below). This listing is for a $150 deposit, and the balance will be paid in cash.

What’s happening?
Each student will be provided with a sustainably-sourced bird skin, which has already been removed from the carcass and tanned, and all of the materials to mount it. No animals were killed for the sake of the art. The meat from this class is being utilized for this dinner event, for which you can purchase tickets. The bird class is limited to ten students each and will focus on the finishing touches of taxidermy rather than a snapshot of the whole process. We will use a variety of professional materials including a commercial taxidermy form to create unique and display-worthy mounts that, with proper care, will last for generations. This is a great class for beginners and advanced students alike, because it focuses on a different skillset than other taxidermy classes you may have taken with me or another instructor. A PDF guide to skinning, preparing, and fleshing birds will be provided.
Taxidermy is an age-old craft with roots in the arts and the sciences. Its applications are not only useful in home decor for hunters, but in museums and scientific collections around the world. Aside from Chuck Testa, other famous taxidermists include Charles Darwin and even Teddy Roosevelt. Follow in their footsteps and preserve a piece of nature for yourself.

What do I leave with?
Each student will leave with a finished taxidermied bird mount, knowledge for aftercare, and the know-how to mount other birds on their own. We will discuss the legalities of sourcing bird specimens in the United States. Whole frozen birds are readily available for future taxidermy projects and students will also receive a list of suppliers and materials needed in order to procure supplies for future projects.

When and where?

The class will be taking place on Friday, November 3rd from 7 pm to 9:30 or 10 pm. The location is Whirlaway Farm, located at 2400 Whirlaway Drive in Garfield. Your GPS may also show Del Valle, but it is the same address.
