PORTLAND - MOVIE MADNESS

Movie Madness is a REALLY COOL video store. I stayed with my friend Jasmine while I was teaching at Portland State University over the weekend. She wanted to watch Django Unchained and apparently the nineties really are alive in Portland because the next thing I knew, we were pulling into the parking lot at a video store.

Not only are there tons of movies from every single era available for rentals, but there are tons of pieces of film memorabilia on display. I like to think of myself as cultured, but I grew up without a television and there are tons of movies I've never seen. I thought it was cool that they had Julie Andrews' dress from The Sound of Music, and a dress Elizabeth Taylor wore on the set of one of her films, but I just about lost it when I realized that high up on one of the display case shelves was one of the prosthetic ears made to be used in the film Blue Velvet.

(In case you were wondering, the hair attached once grew from David Lynch's actual scalp.)

On top of an amazing selection of movies from every genre you could possibly imagine, at the checkout counter they have Red Vines (so good!) licorice in tubs priced at three for a quarter, lots of other miscellaneous candy, and the staff is awesome. I wish there were more specialty movie stores because I'd be less likely to just binge on Netflix all the time. If there are any cool movie stores in your neighborhood, let me know!
